Tamarindo sits at the southern end of a long curve of Pacific coast that includes some of the best beaches in Costa Rica. The town's own bay is wide and gentle; a short walk or drive in either direction takes you to wilder, quieter stretches. The Las Baulas national park north of the estuary protects several kilometres of undeveloped sand.
