Ermita de Monserrate

A small hilltop chapel north of the city centre, reached by climbing a wide stone staircase that rises from the street below. The chapel itself is modest — a single-nave whitewashed building with a terracotta-tiled roof — but the reason to come is the view from the top of the stairs: Matanzas spreads out below, with the bay, the three river valleys, and on a clear day the distant headland toward Varadero all visible.

The climb is not strenuous but worthwhile in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is good. The steps and terrace in front of the chapel are often quiet, a contrast to the Plaza de la Vigía in the centre. A small vendor sometimes sells drinks at the bottom of the stairs.

A story
The chapel was built in 1875 on the highest hill overlooking Matanzas, modelled loosely on the Montserrat pilgrimage site in Catalonia. Catalan immigrants and merchants played a significant role in Matanzas's 19th-century prosperity, and the ermita was their contribution to the city's skyline — a small reminder of the mountains they had left behind.
