Plaza de la Vigía

The main historic square of Matanzas, flanked by three of the city's most important buildings: the Teatro Sauto on the east side, the Palacio de Junco (now the Museo Histórico Provincial) on the north, and the Palacio del Gobierno on the west. The square itself is planted with trees and has benches facing the theatre. A small monument to the Matanzas firefighters who died in the line of duty stands near the centre.

The square is the obvious starting point for a walk around historic Matanzas. The buildings on all four sides are from the mid-to-late 19th century, which gives the square a more coherent period character than most Cuban provincial capitals. In the evenings, residents gather here and the Teatro Sauto's programme is often posted on a notice board outside.

A story
The Plaza de la Vigía takes its name from a watchtower that once stood here to scan the bay for incoming ships. The square became the ceremonial heart of colonial Matanzas — the place where public announcements were made, executions carried out, and, when the city grew wealthy, where the wealthy built their finest public buildings.
