Things to Do

Matanzas earns its reputation as Cuba's cultural capital largely through the Teatro Sauto, one of the finest 19th-century theaters in the Americas, which faces the Plaza de la Vigía alongside the Museo Histórico Provincial. The city was also the birthplace of danzón and rumba, and the musical tradition is still alive — the Casa de la Cultura hosts regular performances. The Museo Farmacéutico on Calle Milanés is the best-preserved 19th-century pharmacy in Latin America. North of the city, the Río Yumurí runs through a deep valley that rewards a quiet afternoon's exploration. For something different, the Ermita de Monserrate offers the best views over the city, while the Cuevas de Bellamar are a short drive south.
