Matanzas's main cemetery, dating from the colonial period and containing some of the most elaborate funerary architecture in Cuba. The wealthiest families of 19th-century Matanzas — sugar merchants, landowners, and professional men — built grand marble mausoleums and family vaults here, and the cemetery gives a vivid picture of how prosperous the city once was.
The tombs include examples of neoclassical, eclectic, and early modernist funerary design, along with simpler graves from later periods. Cuban cemeteries are generally open to visitors and this one rewards a quiet walk. Located about 2 km southwest of the city centre.
