A mid-19th century Italian neoclassical opera house on the Plaza de la Vigía, considered one of the finest theaters in Latin America. The horseshoe-shaped interior has three tiers of boxes, a painted ceiling, and remarkably good acoustics. The building was designed by the Italian architect Daniele Dell'Aglio and opened in 1863.
The theater is still in active use for concerts, ballet, and drama. Guided tours of the interior are possible when no performance is scheduled — the box office can advise. Even if you can't get inside, the neoclassical facade on the plaza is worth seeking out.
