Mural de la Prehistoria

Vast revolutionary mural tracing evolution across a sheer mogote cliff face

A vast painting covering the sheer face of a mogote 4 km west of the village. The mural, executed in vivid primary colours, traces the evolution of life from ammonites to Homo sapiens in a style that is simultaneously monumental and psychedelic. You will either love it or find it baffling — most visitors land somewhere in the middle. There is a restaurant at the base if you need time to decide.

A story
The mural was painted by Leovigildo González Morillo, a student of Diego Rivera, beginning in 1961 on the orders of Che Guevara as a statement of revolutionary creativity. It took 18 painters four years to complete on the sheer face of the Pita mogote. Opinions remain sharply divided.
