El Paseo de la Costanera

El Paseo is the pedestrian-friendly strip that runs parallel to the beach through the centre of Las Terrenas, anchoring the social life of the town in the evenings. Restaurants, bars, and small shops line both sides, and the mix reflects the town's unusual demographic: French bistros next to Dominican comedores, Italian gelato beside local rum shops. After dark it fills up gradually — the Caribbean is on its own schedule — and peaks around 9 or 10 p.m.

Walking the Paseo is the central Las Terrenas activity: choose a restaurant for dinner by looking at the menus and watching the atmosphere, pick up provisions from the small supermarkets, or sit with a Presidente beer and watch the parade of travellers, expats, and locals. The vibe is relaxed and international without being performatively cosmopolitan.

The market at the western end of the Paseo sells local produce, spices, and crafts in the mornings. The vendors are a mix of Dominican farmers and Haitian traders, and the prices are as close to local as you will find in Las Terrenas without going to a colmado on the back streets.
