Playa Las Terrenas

Playa Las Terrenas is the main beach of the town, running west from the village centre along the bay. It is the most accessible beach in the area and the one you end up on by default — steps from the main road, lined with restaurants and bars on one side and fishing boats at the eastern end. The palm trees lean dramatically over the sand, and the water is warm and shallow close to shore.

The beach is at its best in the morning, before the day heats up and the restaurants begin setting out their plastic chairs and parasols. Early swimmers share the sand with local fishermen launching or returning from the bay. By midday the beach is busier and the vendors more active, but it never reaches the density of the main resort beaches on the north coast.

The sand quality and swimming conditions are good along most of the length. The western end, toward Playa Las Ballenas, is slightly less busy and has a more residential character. The beach restaurants along the main stretch serve fresh fish and lobster at tables with a view of the water — lunch here is one of the better ways to spend the middle of the day in Las Terrenas.

A story
The beach that gave Las Terrenas its name — "the terrenas" were the flat coastal plots of land that the first settlers cleared for agriculture. When the road through the mountains was cut in 1946, the settlement changed from a small farming and fishing hamlet to something the road brought traffic to. The beach had been here all along; the town grew around it.
