Samaná Malecón

Waterfront promenade with restaurants and the bridge to nowhere

The waterfront promenade running along the bay is the heart of Samaná town life. Restaurants and bars line the inland side; fishing boats, charter boats, and the pelicans that loiter on the moorings line the seaward side. Sunset over the bay, with the karst islands of Los Haitises picked out in silhouette, is the daily set piece.

At the western end, an arched pedestrian bridge runs out across the water to two small islands. Locally known as the Bridge to Nowhere — it was built as part of an ambitious resort development that never materialised — it ends abruptly at the second island, which makes a good evening walk for views back over the town.
