Camp David is a steakhouse perched on a ridge in the hills above Santiago, in what was once a country retreat used by the dictator Rafael Trujillo (the name was an in-joke, a reference to the American presidential getaway). It still belongs to the Bonetti family, with one of Trujillo's old Cadillacs parked at the entrance as a curiosity.
The food — grilled steaks, lamb chops, Caribbean side dishes — is solid rather than extraordinary, but you do not come here for the food alone. The view across the Cibao Valley and the city lights at dusk is the point. The drive up from town takes about 20 minutes; reservations recommended at weekends.
