Santiago's food scene runs from no-frills Dominican comedores serving la bandera dominicana (rice, beans, meat, plantains, salad) for a few hundred pesos, to upscale restaurants in the Bella Terra and Cerros de Gurabo areas. The Cibao Valley is the breadbasket of the country, so produce here is generally fresher than in the coastal resort cities.
