Costa del Sol

Long Pacific beach strip near San Salvador, backed by the mangroves of Estero de Jaltepeque.

Costa del Sol is El Salvador's easy central-coast escape: a long, developed beach strip in La Paz department, close enough to San Salvador and the international airport for a quick break. It is not a lonely surf beach. It is family houses, beach clubs, seafood restaurants, warm water, and weekend traffic.

The best part is the double coast. On one side you have Playa Costa del Sol, a broad Pacific beach made for swimming, walking, and sunset. On the other side, the Estero de Jaltepeque spreads into mangrove channels, fishing villages, and birdlife.

If you want wild drama, go elsewhere. If you want a practical beach base with boat trips, fresh fish, and day-trip distance from the capital, Costa del Sol makes sense. Isla Tasajera and Bocana El Cordoncillo give the area its quieter edge.

Beaches

Costa del Sol is a broad, accessible Pacific beach rather than a surf pilgrimage. The water is usually gentler than at El Tunco or El Zonte, which is why Salvadoran families like it, but still respect the undertow and ask locally before swimming far out.

Guide

Getting There

Costa del Sol is about 65 km southeast of San Salvador and much closer to the international airport than most Salvadoran beach areas. Driving is the simplest option. Buses and minibuses run toward San Luis La Herradura and the beach, but they are slower and less convenient if you are carrying luggage or planning to move around the estuary.
