El Cuco is the beach base for eastern El Salvador: a small fishing and surf village on the San Miguel coast, far from the busier scene around La Libertad. The sand is dark volcanic grey, the beach is long, and the mood is more local weekend escape than polished resort strip.
The pull here is the coastline. Playa El Cuco is the town beach, lined with simple seafood places and vendor huts. Just west, Playa Las Flores has one of the cleanest right-hand point breaks in the country, with a wave that draws surfers who know El Salvador's "Wild East" by reputation rather than by billboards.
Non-surfers still have reasons to come. Playa El Esteron is quieter and broader, good for long walks when the tide is out, while the less-developed beaches toward Intipuca and El Icacal keep mangroves, river mouths, and a more open horizon. This is not a place for a checklist day. It works best if you want warm water, fish lunches, sunsets, and a coast that has not yet been smoothed into an international beach brand.
