Playa El Tunco is the best-known backpacker beach on the Salvadoran coast, named for the pig-shaped rock just offshore. It is a compact strip of surf schools, guesthouses, bars, and black sand, with enough energy to feel social even in the low season.
This is the easiest place near La Libertad to arrange surf lessons, onward shuttles, and late-night company. It is also the least quiet. Come for a few days if you want the traveller scene; stay elsewhere along the coast if you want to hear more waves than music.
