The Tamanique waterfalls sit inland from the surf coast, reached by a short but steep hike from the village of Tamanique. The trail drops through dry forest to a series of pools and falls where you can cool off after the climb down.
Go with a local guide unless you know the route; the paths can be confusing, and the final approaches are slippery in the rainy season. The waterfalls make a good half-day break from El Tunco or La Libertad when you want fresh water instead of surf.
