Ravnefjeldet (Raven Mountain)

Ravnefjeldet is the mountain immediately above Nanortalik, accessible on foot from the town in a half-day hike. The trail starts at the edge of town and climbs steadily through open tundra to the summit at 308 metres — not a significant altitude, but the views are disproportionate to the effort. The entire Nanortalik archipelago spreads out below, with the fjords, skerries, and granite peaks visible in every direction.

The hike is manageable for anyone in reasonable fitness with appropriate footwear; the terrain is tundra and rock rather than technical scrambling. Bring extra layers regardless of the weather forecast — Arctic conditions change quickly and the summit is exposed. The walk back down to town takes about 90 minutes.

A story
Ravnefjeldet — 308 metres — is the mountain that looms directly over Nanortalik to the north, visible from almost every point in the town. Its Greenlandic name, Quassik, translates roughly as 'the bald one.' The summit is reachable on foot in a few hours and offers panoramic views over the entire Nanortalik archipelago and, on clear days, to Cape Farewell and the southernmost tip of Greenland.
