Casa Cakchiquel

Historic guesthouse turned cultural centre with photography, exhibitions, and a link to Panajachel's bohemian past.

Casa Cakchiquel is a handsome old building near Calle Santander that now works as a cultural centre, gallery, and archive. Its exhibitions often focus on photography, local history, and the Maya communities around Lake Atitlán.

The appeal is partly architectural and partly atmospheric. It is a good pause from the street outside, and the historical photographs give a useful glimpse of Panajachel before the modern shuttle-and-lancha economy took over.

A story
In the mid-20th century Casa Cakchiquel hosted artists, writers, and travellers drawn to Atitlán before mass tourism reached the lake. Its old photographs are valuable because they show Panajachel when the waterfront was still a small highland town rather than the region's transport lobby.
