Iglesia San Pedro Apóstol

Colonial church at the heart of town, still the centre of local Tz'utujil civic life

The colonial church dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle stands at the upper end of town near the central market. Like most highland Guatemala churches, it is a blend of Catholic and Maya traditions — the interior may contain folk altars and offerings that reflect ongoing indigenous religious practice. The church's feast day, 29 June, brings the town's most important fiesta, with processions, music, and dancing that continue for several days.

The surrounding plaza is the gathering point for town life, particularly in the early morning and evening when local families are out and the traveller presence is less visible. The contrast between the indigenous community going about its daily business and the backpacker scene a few hundred metres away is one of the more striking aspects of San Pedro — both communities coexist without much overlap.
