Municipal Market

Small but lively local market for produce, textiles, and the cheapest food in town

San Pedro's municipal market occupies a block near the church and is busiest in the early morning when the vegetable vendors arrive. It is a working local market rather than a tourist attraction — the produce, dried goods, and household items on sale are what people in town actually buy. This makes it one of the best places to observe daily Tz'utujil life.

The food stalls inside and around the market perimeter serve the cheapest cooked food in San Pedro: tamales, eggs and beans, and the daily set lunch. Traditional dress (traje) is worn by many of the women who sell here, with the San Pedro huipil in its characteristic purple and blue tones. This is also a decent place to buy basic food supplies if you are cooking your own meals.
