The Zona Viva

The backpacker strip of bars, hostels, and restaurants between the two docks

San Pedro's Zona Viva is the loose cluster of lanes between the eastern and western docks where most of the traveller-facing businesses concentrate. This is where the bars, hostels, restaurants, and tour operators are. It is not a formally defined zone but rather the organic result of decades of backpacker settlement — a strip that has grown and evolved without planning, following the contours of the steep hillside down to the water.

By day the Zona Viva is where you arrange excursions, find a Spanish school, rent a kayak, or drink coffee and read a book. By night it becomes the social focal point of the lake, with a handful of bars that stay open late, occasional live music, and the monthly full moon parties that draw travellers from Panajachel and San Marcos. It is small enough that you will run into people you met the previous morning.
