Cojolya Association Museum

The Cojolya Association is a non-profit weaving cooperative and museum run by and for Tz'utujil Maya women, dedicated to preserving and promoting the town's textile traditions. The small museum explains the history of backstrap loom weaving in Santiago Atitlán and demonstrates the techniques, with weavers often working on site.

The shop attached to the museum sells high-quality woven pieces at transparent, fair prices that go directly to the weavers — the garments, bags, and wall hangings here are more expensive than the market but are the genuine article, made with traditional techniques and natural dyes where possible. This is consistently rated among the most worthwhile purchases available at Lake Atitlán.

A story
The huipil (blouse) woven by Tz'utujil women of Santiago Atitlán is among the most distinctive in Guatemala, featuring ceremonial birds and figures specific to this town that appear nowhere else. The backstrap loom technique used to produce it has not fundamentally changed since pre-Columbian times. A single huipil can take weeks to complete, which is worth bearing in mind when you see the prices in the market.
