The lake itself is the main draw — kayaking, diving in the clear volcanic water, and simply crossing by lancha between villages. Volcán San Pedro, above the town of the same name, is the most accessible volcano climb and rewards early starters with a full view of the caldera. Santiago Atitlán is worth a visit for two things: Maximón, the syncretic Mayan-Catholic folk deity whose image moves between homes and receives offerings of rum and cigars, and the Cojolya weaving cooperative, which produces and sells exceptional backstrap-loom textiles at fair prices. The Sololá Friday market, on the crater rim above Panajachel, is one of the most authentic highland markets in the country. The trail along the north shore from Santa Cruz to San Marcos (about 2.5 hours) offers excellent lake views.
