Getting There

By air: Most visitors fly in through Toncontín International Airport, located 6 km south of the city centre. The approach is famously difficult — the runway is short and surrounded by hills — which limits the aircraft types that can use it. Flights from North America typically connect through San Salvador, Panama City, or Houston. A new international airport, Palmerola, opened in 2021 about 80 km north of the city and handles some international flights, requiring a longer ground transfer.

By bus: International buses from Guatemala City, San Salvador, Managua, and San José arrive at the modern bus terminal in Comayagüela (the sister city, just across the river). Domestic buses cover the main Honduran cities.

By road: The Pan-American Highway connects Tegucigalpa to San Salvador (5–6 hours) and to the Nicaraguan border. Internal road connections link to San Pedro Sula (3.5–4 hours) and the coast.
