Capiro–Calentura National Park

Cloud-forest reserve in the mountains directly behind Trujillo

Capiro–Calentura rises directly behind Trujillo, climbing from sea level to a 1,200-metre cloud-forest summit in only a few kilometres of horizontal distance. The compressed altitude range produces a remarkable run of habitats — tropical dry forest at the bottom, broadleaf rainforest in the middle, mossy cloud forest with bromeliads and orchids near the top — and a long list of birds and mammals, including howler monkeys and the elusive jaguarundi.

The main access is via the village of Calentura on the eastern edge of town. A rough track climbs into the park; the summit walk takes around five hours round trip and is best with a local guide (hire through any Trujillo hotel). The reserve is administered by FUCAGUA, the local conservation NGO. Bring water, sturdy shoes, and a rain jacket — the upper section is often in cloud.
