Santa Fe Garifuna Village

Garifuna fishing village ten kilometres west, with the best beach in the area

Santa Fe is the most accessible of the Garifuna villages along this stretch of coast — a community of Black Caribs descended from West African and Carib ancestors who were exiled to Honduras from Saint Vincent by the British in 1797. The village is small, friendly, and entirely Garifuna in language, culture, and cuisine. The beach is wide, clean, and quieter than Trujillo's main strip.

Comedor Caballero, on the beach, is one of the best places anywhere to try Garifuna cooking — tapado (a coconut-and-fish stew), machuca (mashed plantain with coconut broth), and grilled fish caught that morning. Drumming groups sometimes perform in the village in the evening. Reach Santa Fe by collective taxi from the Trujillo plaza (about 30 minutes), or by bicycle along the coast road.
