Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts

The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts on Arthur Wint Drive is Jamaica's leading arts institution — a university-level conservatory covering fine arts, sculpture, graphic design, drama, dance, and music. The college hosts regular public exhibitions from student and faculty work, and the quality is often high given the calibre of talent that Jamaica produces in the visual arts.

The college's gallery and public performance spaces are worth checking for exhibitions and events, particularly during end-of-year shows when graduating students present new work. The building itself, in the New Kingston area near the National Stadium, is a significant piece of Jamaican institutional architecture, and the campus has the working atmosphere of a genuinely active creative community rather than a heritage institution.

A story
The college is named after Edna Manley (1900–1987), who is as central to Jamaican visual culture as Bob Marley is to the music. A sculptor trained in Britain who became a passionate advocate for Jamaican art and identity, Manley taught, mentored, and organised the Jamaican art world for decades while also being married to Norman Manley, the country's first Prime Minister. The institution bearing her name still functions as the main training ground for Jamaican artists.
