Half Way Tree Transport Centre is the main public transport hub for Uptown Kingston and, by extension, one of the best places to observe how the city actually functions day to day. Route taxis — white Toyota Corolla station wagons that run fixed routes for a flat fare — converge here from every direction, their windscreen placards showing destinations from Papine to Portmore, Spanish Town to Bull Bay. JUTC buses also terminate here.
The square around the Half Way Tree clock tower buzzes at all hours from early morning to late evening. Street vendors sell newspapers, snacks, mobile phone accessories, and water. The constant flow of people, vehicles, and commerce makes it one of the most energetically Jamaican places in the city. Not a visitor destination in the conventional sense — but understanding this square is understanding how Kingston moves.
