Getting There

Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is Jamaica's main tourist gateway. Direct flights connect to most major US east-coast cities (New York, Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, Boston, Philadelphia), Toronto, Montreal, London, Manchester, and a long list of Caribbean and Latin American hubs.

The terminal is five minutes' taxi from the Hip Strip — agree a fare with a JUTA driver at the rank or use a hotel transfer. Avoid unmarked taxis. Public buses (route 10) run cheaply between the airport and downtown but are not designed for travellers with luggage.

Cruise ships dock at the Freeport pier, west of the centre. Most tour buses go straight to the plantations and beaches; if you have a free morning you can take a taxi into town to see Sam Sharpe Square.

Long-distance buses to Kingston, Negril, Ocho Rios, and Port Antonio leave from the depot on Barnett Street. Knutsford Express runs an air-conditioned coach service on the main routes — book ahead.
