The central plaza is the heart of Ajijic, a shaded square surrounded by the colonial-era San Andrés Parish Church, the local government building, and the small restaurants and cafes that have always been here. The church, originally built in the 17th century, has a simple whitewashed facade and a peaceful interior with local devotional art.
The plaza fills with life on weekend evenings and during festivals, when the entire town seems to gather here. The traditional Saturday market of local crafts and produce is held in the streets around the plaza. Sit on a bench, drink a coffee from one of the surrounding cafes, and watch the town go about its business.
