Jocotepec sits at the western end of Lake Chapala, about 20 kilometers from Ajijic along the lakeside road. It is a more authentically Mexican small town than Ajijic, with fewer expats and a more traditional market life. The town is known for its handwoven serapes — the distinctive striped blankets that are woven on back-strap looms by local artisans and sold in the market.
The Sunday market in Jocotepec is one of the better traditional markets on the lake, attracting vendors from surrounding indigenous Nahua communities selling produce, textiles, and crafts. The lakefront here is quieter than Ajijic and offers views east back down the lake with the mountains rising beyond. A half-day trip by local bus or car.
