The Hotel Zone has the polished malls: La Isla (open-air, with a small aquarium, on a man-made canal), Kukulcán Plaza (the upscale option with luxury brands), and Plaza Flamingo (more affordable). Downtown is where locals shop — Plaza Las Américas is the giant mall, and the Mercado 28 is the classic Mexican tourist market, with hundreds of small stalls selling silver, hammocks, leather, ceramics, and souvenirs. Haggling is expected at Mercado 28; fixed prices everywhere else. The artisan market Coral Negro in the Hotel Zone is more tourist-priced.
