La Pascualita

A bridal dress shop window that has become one of Mexico's most visited curiosities. The mannequin known as La Pascualita — Little Pascuala — has stood in the same window at La Popular on Calle Victoria since 1930, and in that time she has acquired a reputation as the most lifelike dummy in the country. Her glass eyes follow visitors around the room. Her hands have realistic-looking veins and fingerprints. Her hair appears to be real.

Whether she is or is not an embalmed corpse is a question the shop has never answered definitively. The window display changes seasonally, so Pascualita appears in different wedding dresses throughout the year. The shop is in the downtown area, easy to find and worth the few minutes it takes to stand and stare.

A story
The rumour began in 1930, when a new mannequin appeared in the window of La Popular bridal shop and locals noticed its uncanny resemblance to the shop owner's daughter, Pascuala Esparza, who had recently died of a black widow spider bite on her wedding day. The shop owner denied it was her daughter's embalmed body — but the mannequin has been a fixture in the window ever since, and the legend has never quite died.
