In the municipal cemetery on the north-east edge of town, the tomb of José Alfredo Jiménez is an outsize tile-and-stone sculpture in the shape of a wide-brimmed sombrero draped over a folded sarape. The colours are bright, the scale is theatrical, and the design quotes the costume Jiménez wore on stage for most of his career. It is unmistakable from the cemetery gate.
Fans leave flowers, tequila bottles, and handwritten requests at the base — the mausoleum functions as a working shrine, especially around the anniversaries of his birth and death (19 January and 23 November). The cemetery is open during daylight hours and free to enter. About fifteen minutes' walk or a five-minute taxi ride from the Jardín.
