Eating at Mercado San Juan de Dios (Libertad)

The ground floor of the Mercado Libertad — also called San Juan de Dios — is one of the most concentrated street food experiences in Mexico. The stalls run along both sides of the main hall, serving birria by the cup, menudo, pozole, fresh juices, and tortas ahogadas (pork sandwiches drowned in a spicy tomato sauce, a Guadalajara obsession). Prices are very low, queues indicate quality, and the noise level is high.

Arrive hungry before noon. The birria stalls in the far corners of the ground floor tend to be the most popular with locals who know the market. Eat at the stall's counter rather than taking your food to the less comfortable shared tables.
