Cerro de la Campana

The Cerro de la Campana rises abruptly from the flat desert floor in the northern part of the city, offering panoramic views of Hermosillo and the surrounding desert. It is a straightforward hike to the top — the trail takes about forty minutes each way and is well-used by locals for morning exercise. The view from the summit takes in the city spread across the desert, the mountains of the Sierra Madre in the east, and on clear days you can glimpse the coastal range to the west.

The hill is a protected natural area with a small planetarium near the base. In the early morning the rock faces glow orange in the desert light; sunset visits are popular with photographers. Access is via Boulevard Agustín de Vildósola on the north side of the city.

A story
The name — Bell Hill — comes from a bell-shaped rock near the summit that resonates when struck. Local legend holds that you can hear it ring on quiet mornings. The volcanic dome was considered sacred by the Seri people, who called the city Hatáap Canoj, meaning "at the foot of the rounded hill." It still appears on the state seal of Sonora.
