A short walk north along the Malecon from Olas Altas you come to a rocky outcrop called El Clavadista. Local divers climb to a platform about 14 metres up and wait — for the right moment, for the right wave, for a tip — and then jump. They time the leap so they hit deep water as a wave breaks below.
The performance is not quite the spectacle of La Quebrada in Acapulco, but the setup is similar and the divers are good. They work mainly in the late afternoon and at sunset. Tipping is the deal — a hundred pesos a head is reasonable. The view from the cliffside Mirador platform, with the sea breaking on the rocks below, is one of the better sunset spots in the city.
