Arco de San Juan

Colonial gateway marking Merida's old Camino Real to Campeche

Arco de San Juan is one of Merida's surviving colonial arches, spanning the street near Parque de San Juan south of the main plaza. Built as a city gateway, it marked the old route toward Campeche and still gives this edge of the centre a sense of arrival.

It is a quick stop, but a good one if you are walking beyond the most polished blocks of Centro. The arch, church, and square together show how Merida's old entrances became neighbourhood landmarks rather than museum pieces.
