Hammocks are Mérida's signature product and the streets around the central market have dozens of hammock shops. Quality varies considerably; a proper Yucatecan hammock is made from fine-spun cotton and is wide enough to sleep in diagonally. Guayaberas — the lightweight embroidered shirts worn by men throughout the Caribbean and Yucatán — are made here and available at dedicated shops on Calle 59. The Sunday market at Santa Lucía Park has local honey, embroidered clothing, and crafts. Huipiles (traditional Maya embroidered blouses) from the Yucatán can be found at the market and at several handicraft shops near the plaza.
