Café along Calle 60

The café strip on Calle 60 between the Plaza Mayor and Parque Santa Lucía

The stretch of Calle 60 between the Plaza Mayor and Parque Santa Lucía, roughly six blocks, has the highest concentration of outdoor cafes and restaurants in the city centre. The Teatro Peón Contreras, the city's ornate 1908 opera house with a Carrara marble staircase and a history of attracting major Mexican performers, anchors the block at Calle 57, and the cafes that spill onto the pavement in front of it and along the adjacent streets are the best place in the city to sit outside in the evenings.

Most of the cafes on this strip serve Yucatecan coffee (grown in the south of the state) alongside standard Mexican and international menus. The quality of the coffee is worth noting: Yucatán has a small but serious coffee culture, and the regional beans, typically shade-grown in the highland areas near the Chiapas border, are excellent. The best of the cafes have tables under trees or in covered arcades, which makes them viable even during the hot season. In the evenings, the strip comes alive: street performers, vendors selling iced fruits, and the spillover crowd from the nearby parks create a pleasant evening atmosphere without requiring much effort to find.
