Mercado Lucas de Galvez

Sensory-overload market with Yucatecan street food and hammock shops

The central market, a block southeast of the Plaza Mayor, is a sensory overload in the best sense. Maya is spoken as much as Spanish among the vendors. The food section has Yucatecan staples that rarely appear in restaurants: papadzules (tortillas in pumpkin-seed sauce), panuchos, salbutes, and poc chuc ready to eat at tiny counters. The surrounding streets have the best hammock shops in the city — Merida is the hammock capital of Mexico and buying one here is a practical and authentic souvenir.
