Merida's grand boulevard, modelled on the Champs-Elysees by the henequen barons who grew rich on sisal rope at the turn of the 20th century. The wide, tree-lined avenue is still lined with the mansions they built — French-influenced, extravagant, and in various states of restoration. The Museum of Anthropology and History of Yucatan (Museo Regional de Yucatan) occupies the Palacio Canton, one of the finest of these mansions, and is the best place to understand the pre-Hispanic cultures of the peninsula. Sunday mornings, the Paseo is closed to cars and taken over by cyclists and walkers.
