Getting Around

Xalapa is a walking city for the most part, though its hills mean that getting around can be strenuous. The centre is compact and the main sights — Parque Juarez, the Cathedral, the Pinacoteca, and the market — are within easy walking distance of one another. The Museo de Antropología is about two kilometres north of the centre; a taxi or bus rides take a few minutes.

Taxis are cheap and plentiful. Collective taxis (combis) run fixed routes and are even cheaper, but routes can be confusing for first-time visitors. Uber operates in Xalapa. For the outlying attractions — Macuiltepetl park, the Paseo de los Lagos, Coatepec — a combination of taxis and colectivos covers the distances easily. The city is not easy to navigate by car; the steep streets and one-way systems are designed for local knowledge. Public parking exists around the market and near the university.
