Jardín Botánico Francisco Javier Clavijero

Cloud-forest botanical garden on the southern edge of the city, with a focus on Mexican mountain flora

The Jardín Clavijero sits on the southern edge of Xalapa on a saved patch of cloud forest, the bosque mesófilo de montaña that once covered this whole valley. The collection focuses on Mexican mountain flora — pines, oaks, magnolias, tree ferns, orchids and bromeliads — with shorter sections on bamboos, cacti and cycads.

Paths wind through several hectares of secondary forest with interpretive signage in Spanish; an observation tower gives long views of the valley. Open Tuesday to Sunday, modest entry. Combine with a stop at the Café Avenida or a coffee finca on the way back into town.

A story
The garden was founded in 1977 by the Instituto de Ecología on a remnant patch of cloud forest — one of the most threatened habitats in Mexico — and remains a centre for cloud-forest conservation, with breeding programmes for endangered Veracruz species.
