The Teatro del Estado is Veracruz state's main theatre and performing arts venue, located near the University of Veracruz campus in the northern part of the city. It is the home of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa, founded in 1929 and one of Mexico's oldest and most respected symphony orchestras. The orchestra performs a regular season of concerts from September through June; attending a concert here is one of the most distinctly Xalapan experiences available — the city's identity as an arts and university centre is nowhere more visible than in a full house at the Teatro del Estado.
The building is a handsome modernist structure with good acoustics. Check the programme online before visiting — the season includes not just symphonic concerts but also dance performances, theatre, and opera. Ticket prices are modest by any standard.
