Lake Apanás sits about 8km north of Jinotega, a large reservoir in a mountain valley that is one of the most scenic spots in the Nicaraguan highlands. The pine-covered hillsides drop steeply to the water, the surface reflects the clouds, and on calm mornings the mist hangs over the lake in layers. It is a genuinely beautiful place.
Fishing is popular and local boats can be hired to explore the lake's many inlets and islands. The road around the eastern shore passes through small farming communities and offers good views. Kayaking is possible from the northern shore. There are simple restaurants near the main access road that serve fresh fish from the lake — tilapia and mojarra are the most common. The lake is about 20 minutes by taxi or bus from Jinotega town centre.
