El Nispero Zoo and Botanical Garden

El Nispero is part zoo and part botanical garden, set on the hillside above the village centre. The animal collection focuses on native Panamanian species: jaguars, tapirs, coatis, monkeys, parrots, macaws, and the critically endangered Panamanian golden frog, which is now essentially absent from the wild. The grounds are well maintained, the enclosures are reasonably spacious by Central American standards, and the combination of animals and tropical garden makes for a genuinely pleasant morning out.

The botanical section holds an extensive orchid collection alongside the zoo animals, making it a reasonable alternative to APROVACA if you want to combine both wildlife and plants in a single visit. Entrance fees are modest. The zoo is open daily and is a popular stop for families, though it attracts few independent travellers who often skip it in favour of the outdoor activities.

A story
El Nispero holds one of the last captive populations of the Panamanian golden frog (Atelopus zeteki), a species that has been virtually wiped out in the wild by the chytrid fungus. The vivid yellow-and-black frogs — a national symbol of Panama — can no longer be found at all in the streams around Anton Valley where they were once common. The zoo's breeding programme is one of the few remaining insurance policies against total extinction.
