La Mallorquina

La Mallorquina opened in 1848 and claims the title of the oldest restaurant in Puerto Rico — a long room of slow ceiling fans, white-jacketed waiters, and tile floors on Calle San Justo. The menu is Spanish-Puerto Rican of the old school: asopao de mariscos (a seafood rice stew), camarones en salsa, paella, and a fixed-price lunch menu that has been more or less the same for half a century.

The restaurant is genuinely old, slightly tired, and that is the appeal. Lunch is the right meal here — busier, more locals, and the kitchen is at its sharpest. Service is formal in the Spanish style.
