Red Beach (Caracas)

Crescent of pink-tinted sand inside the wildlife refuge

Inside the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, on what used to be the Navy's eastern bombing range, Red Beach is the most polished of the former Navy beaches — a sheltered crescent of pinkish sand with shaded picnic tables, calm water, and no development whatsoever. The pink tint comes from crushed coral mixed into the white quartz.

It is reached down a paved road from the refuge entrance and is signposted. Snorkelling along the rocky points at either end is good. There are no facilities beyond toilets and the picnic shelters, so bring everything you need for the day.
