La Toc Battery

A late nineteenth-century British coastal battery on the headland west of Castries, La Toc was part of the chain of fortifications guarding the approaches to the harbour. The gun emplacements, magazines, and tunnels are mostly intact and have been preserved by the Saint Lucia National Trust, who run occasional guided tours.

The site is quiet, the views west over the Caribbean are excellent, and the underground tunnels — cool and damp — are unexpectedly atmospheric. Combine it with a swim at La Toc Beach below.
